Almost every market research program is conducted among a group of people who represent households in some larger area. Homescan relies on this sampling process as well, to ensure that every household in the country has an equal chance of being selected, and that our sample truly reflects the total U.S.
Once we have a base of names to choose from, we then make sure that our sample has the same proportion of households - large and small, urban and rural, different incomes, races, etc. - as the total population.
Then, when we need to recruit households from a certain part of the country, or from households with, for instance, three children, we "invite" those households who expressed interest - and who fit the profile - to become members of our panel.
